We learned a lot about penguins this week. The students got to watch the live penguin cam on the California Academy of Sciences' website. Have your child tell you about the true story of Pierre the penguin and what led to him wearing a wetsuit!
During shared reading, we read fiction penguin books and worked on the concepts of characters, setting and major events. I am so proud of how well the students are doing in math. Our last few topics have fewer lessons, so we are moving right through them! The topic 7 test is next Tuesday. The Valentine's Day party is Friday, February 10 from 11:45-12:30. This is a half day, so you are welcome to take your child afterward if you come. Helper/snack list: Mon- Morna Tues- Ally Wednesday- Blake Thursday- Aryah Friday- Makenzie

We dove into our next writing unit, opinion. The students are loving it and doing a great job! They like sharing thoughts, likes or dislikes, about something they feel strongly about.
Shared reading was all about a close reading of a passage about reindeer/caribou. We read it each day and completed vocab and comprehension activities. See if your child can share what we learned. The students enjoyed learning about Martin Luther King, Jr. We talked about his life, his impact, segregation and civil rights. I brought it a brown and white egg for an activity to elaborate on the fact that even though people are different on the outside, we are alike on the inside and shouldn't be treated differently based on the color of our skin. Next Tuesday is the 100th day of school. Wow, this year is flying by! We also have Tiger Pride next Friday. Have a wonderful weekend! Helper/snack list: Mon- Brylee Tues- Slayden Wednesday- Clover Thursday- Tori Friday- Eli I could have done without the snow day last week, but it was nice to have one more day off! The students had a great week and are getting back in the swing of things. We reviewed a lot of behaviors and expectations to make sure we started on the right foot.
Our next writing unit is opinion. I think the students are going to enjoy it. Fact vs. opinion was a major topic this week. We learned about Alaska and the Iditarod, discussed facts and voiced personal thoughts about both. See if your child can tell you about the race. They loved learning about it! We had fun creating snow globes and writing about what we would do if we lived in one. The finished projects are adorable. I'm anxious to find out if the ice storm is really coming tonight. Just in case, I'll send home this newsletter today :) Helper/snack list: Mon- No School Tues- Logan Wednesday- Jayce Thursday- Anthony Friday- Blake |
