We ended last week with a bang! As I mentioned, we got a special treat for being the quietest class during, after and on the way back to class from our fundraiser assembly. Then, our class had the most points of first grade in the lunch room all week, so we earned 15 minutes extra recess! I'm so proud of how well they listen behave and follow directions.
Our second full week was a huge success. We are still practicing Read to Self and building our stamina. We are up to 12 minutes. On Monday, we launched our second Daily 5 rotation, Work on Writing. Everyone is doing awesome. Ask your child about correct behaviors for this time! We do a great job of getting started right away, working quietly and staying in one spot. Writing the entire time is a work in progress, but that comes with practice. We frequently talk about the unlimited possibilities of things to write about. By Monday, we'll be up to 8 minutes. A Small Moment Story was another main focus this week. We discussed telling something you did or something that happened to you and breaking it up in steps/parts. I emphasized that it is not simply telling me about something you like or are going to do. Everyone is improving significantly. See if your child can tell you a small moment story :) PALS (Peer Assisted Learning Strategies) has been a huge hit! We started this program on Monday as well. Students work in pairs and practice sounds, sight words, accuracy and fluency. Everyone is enjoying having independence in this alternate style of learning! Please remember to look over your child's Class Dojo point sheet in his/her take-home folder and initial the appropriate box after each week. Thank you! What an incredible official first week! Our class has soaked up so much information already. Aside from going over procedures, routines and expected behaviors, we've talked a lot about writing and reading. Ask your child about their Heart Map and what people, things and places they wrote inside. This is kept in their writing binder and used throughout the beginning of the year to help spark ideas on what to write about.
On Monday, we launched Read to Self by discussing what this Daily 5 time should look and sound like. Ask your child about this list! We started reading for 3 minutes and are slowly building our stamina. I was so impressed with how well they modeled the appropriate behaviors right off the bat. They have also listened to some great books during our Shared Reading. Have you child retell one of them to you--Mrs. Smith's Incredible Storybook, Jack's Talent or Each Kindness. Our new Math, enVision, comes with student workbooks. Each week, I'll send home the pages that we worked on. We won't get to all of the practice problems at times. It usually won't be homework, but your child is welcome to complete for extra practice. You've probably noticed the Class Dojo point tracker by now. The students fill out their positive and negative points each day. This stays in the take-home folder, but at the end of each week, please initial in the appropriate box. Thank you! Here is next week's helper/snack list (also found on Snack Calendar tab): Mon- Gabby Tues- Thomas Wed- Logan Thu- Jayce Fri- Anthony What an amazing first day! Everyone absorbed a lot of information, followed directions, was attentive and ready to learn. I have to say, each one of your kids is such a joy to have in class. They are all so sweet with fun personalities.
As some of you have seen, I got the students a binder pocket and put in their take-home folder. This can be used for lunch money, notes, etc. The folders are put in their backpacks to take home each night. They are home for important information and/or work from the day, so please check each night if possible. If you haven't already, please sign up for Class Dojo and Remind by Monday. Next week, I will start using Class Dojo as encouragement and a behavior tool in hopes to help create a positive, happy classroom. I'll also start sending information and reminders through Remind.
