I hope everyone had a nice Thanksgiving! We reviewed on our 7 Habits this week and reflected on what we do well in our class and what we can work on. We're going to continue to do this every Monday. I think it will be beneficial to discuss at the start of each week!
Students are practicing identifying character traits and the difference between them and a person's appearance. They learned about the parts of a letter and practiced writing to friends, family and even Santa! They had fun using their imaginations writing to Goldilocks as one of the three bears. We are still enjoying nonfiction writing and learning so much. It is exciting to watch them grow the last few weeks. If you wish to participate, the items for Shoeboxes for Soldiers are due next Monday, December 4. Thank you, and have a great weekend! What a busy last couple weeks! We are focusing on Habit 6: Synergize. Teamwork has been a frequent topic. We brainstormed how to work together on the playground, in class and at home.
Students are enjoying the non-fiction writing unit. We finished up our Native American book. I hope you get a chance to read them this weekend! We learned all about how they used buffalo, their homes, jobs, the first Thanksgiving and Squanto. Last week, our librarian organized a traveling Native American history trunk from the Greene Co. History Museum. The kids loved learning about and seeing Osage artifacts, animal bones and animal pelts! It has been so fun getting into our new science standards. We launched a weather unit, and learning about tornadoes is a class favorite. Students experimented with a tornado in a jar—mason jar 3/4 full of water, along with a dash of soap and some glitter. When rotated quickly in a circular motion, students witnessed a funnel. Just a heads up, the students have a sub Thursday, November 30. I am out for a science meeting. Also, our next math test is Friday, December 1. Snack Helpers Monday- Braylen Tuesday- Cadence Wednesday- No School Thursday- No School Friday- No School We are working on Habit 5: Seek First to Understand, Then to be Understood. We discussed how we are in control of our words and how those words can affect others. Students practiced attentive, whole body listening.
We started our non-fiction writing unit last week. From How to Make Pizza to Sharks, I really enjoy reading everyone's teaching books! As a class, we made a non-fiction book about pumpkins. I bet your child can tell you anything you'd like to know about them :) For one of our pumpkin experiments, we predicted if we thought our pumpkin would sink or float. Many were surprised that the pumpkin floated, no matter its size. The Veteran's Day assembly is next Friday, November 10 at 9:30. Parents are welcome. I hope everyone has a nice 5-day weekend!
