It was great to see some of you at Open House last night! It was a fun, busy week full of fiction and non-fiction apple books, an apple observation journal, apple taste testing and making applesauce.
Students worked on editing their narrative stories. They searched for correct upper and lowercase letter usage and end punctuation. Students had their first math test this week. It is coming home today. You will see a number at the top. This is the proficiency scale score. Usually, the max score is a 3. For this one and only assessment, the max score is a 2. This is because the standard is adding and subtracting within 20, but Topic 1 only covered within 10. I am happy to explain more thoroughly. We had such a productive week. Daily 5 is officially launched. We discussed what's expected for Listen to Reading, and I introduced one of my favorite reading apps, Epic, to the students. They seem to love it as much as I do! We are still working hard on our narrative writing. They are practicing zooming in on a specific moment and telling me what happened using small steps and great detail.
Students completed the reading and math NWEA tests. I will receive those reports sometime next week. If your child mentions something about my water goal, it is a goal I'm sharing and tracking with the class. We are focusing on setting and following through with goals this year, and observing me and my goal is the first step :) Spirit Week starts Monday! Every school comes to the parade on Friday. It is such a neat thing to experience! I hope some of you can make it. Mon- PJs Tue- Hero v. For Daily 5, students learned how to be successful during Work on Writing and Word Work. They are doing such a great job building stamina and doing what's expected. We talked about Habit 1: Be Proactive this week and settled into our class leadership roles.
For math, we started the year with step-up to first grade lessons. We completed those yesterday and start Topic 1 today. The math packet that comes home most days does not need to come back to school. If your child does not have something complete, it is because we did it as a class at the carpet, for example. I will hold on to the packet and work with them the following day if a student does not finish for some reason. Students loved the STEM challenge we did today! We read the book Recess Queen, then each group created a playground using paper towel rolls. Class Dojo FYI- this is typically used as a behavior system, but I am not using it for that purpose this year. Students will not receive points for good/expected behaviors. I'm using it simply because I love the class story feature, and it is so easy to communicate through messages. But don't worry, there are plenty of things I do in our room to acknowledge great things! I am working to help students be intrinsically motivated. I hope to see some of you at the community tailgate tonight before the football game! Snack Helpers Monday- Grayson Tuesday- Gavin Wednesday- Roman Thursday- Kyanna Friday- Maria |
