We had fun learning about arctic animals and their adaptations. Ask your child about the blubber glove! Students practiced more opinion prompts. They are doing a great job including all of the pieces and are improving on giving examples. Our Topic 9 math test is next Friday.

We had fun learning about penguins and we watching the live penguin cam at the California Academy of Sciences aquarium. We also read fiction stories about penguins and practiced telling the setting, main characters and major events.
Students are working on word endings (-ed, -ing, -est) in phonics, I see it transferring when they read books in group! We are continuing to work on goal setting and tracking. Each student set an academic goal and decided on a strategy that will help him/her reach that goal. Upcoming dates and friendly reminders: 1/31 100th Day of School + Tiger Pride 2/7 First Fridays for Families 2/14 Valentine's Day Party from 11:45-12:30. Your child is welcome to bring valentines and some sort of box/bag. We will exchange during the party. Friday- Gavin We started our opinion writing unit, and they are enjoying it. We started with some prompts, then students chose what to write using an introduction, 3 reasons or more and a conclusion. We are working on adding detail and convincing our readers.
We explored some activities on SeeSaw. The students love it! As a teacher, I appreciate the variety of activities, along with the engagement of the students and the ownership they have of their work. We are still learning how to better use the type tool, record feature, and especially how to write nicely with the pen tool :) If you are not connected to our class, please check your email for the sign up instructions. I hope everyone had a wonderful break! We jumped right back into our daily schedule and routines. Students did a bit more how-to writing, along with some winter-themed writing. Next week we begin our opinion unit.
We are continuing to set goals in guided reading groups. The end of the year first grade reading goal is Level J 18. Report cards for second quarter are coming home tomorrow. Please let me know if you have any questions. Before break, we started Topic 7 and 8 in math. Students are learning about place value and how to count by 10s and 1s up to 120. In addition to our work books/pages, we'll do extra practice sheets and oral counting to prepare for our assessment. I have a Lighthouse full-day meeting on Monday, so students have a substitute.
