Over the last few weeks, we've discussed Habit 1: Be Proactive. Students learned about responsibility and being in charge of your words and actions. They can tell me ways they are proactive at school or home, as well as point out in a book if a character is being proactive or not.
I am modeling goal setting/tracking. In a couple weeks, students set an academic goal (reading level) and track the lead measure (Raz-Kids, read to self, etc.) they use to meet the goal. I was excited to start guided reading. I love working with small groups and seeing the growth. In topic 2 math, Students are working on doubles facts and counting on. The assessment is next Tuesday. This is reported on the grade card for first quarter. We had fun learning about apples this week. We observed an apple without its peel, and students taste tested juice and cider and graphed the results. Friendly reminder that the Book Fair starts this week! Please see last week's post for more information.
Daily 5 is completely launched. Students are doing a great job working independently, so it is time to start Reading groups. I will meet with each group 2-4 times per week. We work on sight words, reading strategies, guided writing, comprehension, etc. I'm excited to begin! We celebrated our narrative writing this week by sharing a small moment story of choice with the class. I was proud of everyone's confidence! Snack helpers Mon- Jase Tues- Grayson Wed- Clementine Thurs- Brooklynn Fri- Connor As I mentioned via SeeSaw, the students had another awesome week. They worked hard on the NWEA testing and received a class award in music (first of the school)! We celebrated with donuts today.
I launched Word Work for Daily 5, and students continued to build stamina for Read to Self and Work on Writing. Our first math test is next Tuesday. Students are working on solving addition problems with unknown parts and finding the difference using subtraction. Our Book Fair is September 21-25th. Magazines are coming home today. The process will look different this year, so I want to pass along some information. * It will not be open before or after school. Students shop in person during their regular library time on Thursday. Due to our no visitor policy, families cannot shop the Book Fair with their student(s). * As a district, the librarians are encouraging the online fair. We receive the same incentives from Scholastic when parents shop online. Books are mailed directly to the student's house. https://www.scholastic.com/bf/willardeastelementaryschool1 * To limit our cash and coin intake, we encourage Scholastic's eWallet. Families add money to their child's account, and then they can spend it using a barcode that is sent to Mrs Kramer. https://www.scholastic.com/bf/willardeastelementaryschool1 Snack helpers Mon- Logan Tues- Bingham Wed- Reese Thurs- Brooke Fri- Braiden *We now have 16 students in our class Another great week! Students worked hard on their narratives/small moment stories. I launched Listen to Reading and Work on Writing for Daily 5. We discussed purpose of listening to books and the many options of things to write during free-write time, and students practiced building their stamina in both areas.
For Leader in Me, we have been discussing leadership, our strengths and classroom environment—physical and emotional. Today we wrote our class mission statement. I was proud of the words they came up with! I will share this next week. They also started class leadership roles and are taking great ownership of them. Students take the reading portion of the NWEA next Tuesday and the math portion on Thursday. This provides accurate insights into where kids are at in their learning throughout the year. If your child does not have headphones at school yet, please try to send some next week so he/she can use them for these assessments. Thank you, and have a wonderful three-day weekend!
