We are moving right along! My favorite part of the week was coming up with our class mission statement. I guided the kids slightly, but for the most part, they are the ones who created it! We started by making a list of things we want to see in our room and in others—things that make us want to be at school. Here is what we made:
In our class, we are kind to everyone and follow the rules. We are happy and keep our room clean. Wow, love it. This is posted in our room as a constant reminder for everyone! For our narrative writing unit, we started learning about small moment stories. I was impressed with each student's first attempt, and I enjoy reading about everyone's experiences. We finished launching Read to Self for Daily 5, and had our first Work on Writing mini lesson today. Building our stamina is a big focus. We begin with only 3 minutes of practice and work our way up to 20—it's a process! I give my students the opportunity to participate in the Book It program. Starting in October, students read 10 books each month to receive free personal pan pizza coupons from Pizza Hut! Each child is limited to one coupon/month. I'm sending home reading logs tomorrow as an easy way to keep track of books read. Once filled up, have your child bring the log to me, and I will send home the pizza coupon and another log! It is a pleasure getting to know everyone! The All About Me bags were great for introductions. I have already learned so much in the first several days of school.
Aside from reviewing school and classroom rules and getting to know each other, we talked a lot about our personal strengths and how everyone is a leader in some way. Leader in Me is part of our daily conversations. So far, we have discussed leadership, touched on the 7 Habits and talked about what a happy classroom environment looks like. For writing, students are working on narratives. We created anchor charts for the room to help us remember the many things to write about—family, vacations, pets, events, places. We started math on Monday, and I am so impressed with how it's going! Students are already working through addition and subtraction problems to 10. A Leadership Role/Class Job document is coming home in your child's folder tomorrow. By Tuesday, August 29, please have him/her select his/her top 3 choices and return it to me. Each student has a role in class. I plan to switch them around each quarter or semester. Snack Helper Monday- Ali Tuesday- Hunter Wednesday- Chase Thursday- Ben Friday- No School Have a great weekend! It's that time again! I hope everyone enjoyed the break as much as I did. It was wonderful spending quality time with family and friends. I really look forward to this school year with you and your child. I want to be as much help to you as possible. To start--
If you haven't already bought supplies, click {HERE} for the school supply list. You can find very inexpensive earbuds at DollarTree, Walgreens and Walmart. Please label them with your child's initials or name. I mentioned this in my letter, but please do not buy Kleenex or bottle glue—I have plenty! Also, your child does not need a school box because supplies are housed in caddies on each table. I can't wait to meet you and your child at Meet the Teacher Night on August 15! |
