The students dove right into Genius Hour on Tuesday. We meet each Tuesday and Thursday during RTI. On the eighth and final session, the groups present their project to the others. They are enjoying it already!
For shared reading, we did Reader's Theater. Each group was given a mini script and practiced it throughout the week. On Friday, everyone performed for the class. It was a hit, so I plan to do it again before the end of the year. For our fourth and final writing unit, we are back to narrative. The students wrote about spring break, something that is more precious than gold, a time they got hurt, along with some small moment story free writing. I enjoy reading everyone's pieces. Next week starts parent teacher conferences, and we do not have school on Friday. Hope everyone has a great weekend! Students created cinquain and bio poems. I hope you all were able to read your child's bio poem—I loved listening to them and learned some new things about each student.
After spring break, first grade is starting Genius Hour, and I am really looking forward to it. I hope the students are just as excited. We launched it this week by reading books such as, What Do You Do With an Idea and The OK Book. Students picked a topic that interests them (ocean life, Titanic, rainforest, volcanoes, Egyptian pyramids). They are in groups of 5 based on the similar interest. Every Tuesday and Thursday during RTI for four weeks, students go to their designated teacher/helper to learn about, research and create a project about their topic. If you are unfamiliar with Genius Hour, please check out this video to learn more! 3rd Quarter has come and gone! Wow, My first year of teaching is flying by even more than expected. I hope everyone has a great spring break! Helper/snack list: Mon- Logan (birthday!) Tues- Brylee Wednesday- Slayden Thursday- Clover Friday- Tori It was a fun week celebrating Read Across America. We read all sorts of Dr. Seuss books, talked about word families we see in his books and made Seuss Juice. Writing was all about book reviews, which ends our opinion unit. In science, we learned about weather and types of precipitation. We tracked the weather for the last three weeks and recorded it on a chart.
