The hayride on Monday was a blast! The kids loved it, and I'm glad they could experience it. We got to see animals, tour the pumpkin patch and pick out a pumpkin for our room.
Now that Daily 5 is launched and DRAs are complete, we started guided reading groups. One of my favorite things about first grade is the amount of growth the students make from the beginning of the year to the end, especially in reading. With my journalism background, I have a love for all things grammar and copy editing :) I shared that passion this week, and we talked about punctuation and practiced using the four types of sentences in our writing. We read Mo Willems books, which provide great examples of all four. Our Leader in Me focus the last two weeks was Habit 3: Put First Things First. The students are truly understanding the meaning of this habit. We discussed class rules and our responsibilities of being leaders in our room, in the school and at home. Our Fall Party is next Friday, October 20 at 11:45. This is a half day, so if you join us, you can take your child home after the party. Friendly reminder to please bring $1 to cover the activity and snack. Parent Teacher Conferences are the week of October 30. Tuesday- Miles Wednesday- Scout Thursday- Olivia Friday- Half Day/Party It was great seeing some of you at Open House! The students and I are proud of what they have to show so far this year—especially the small moment story book. They worked so hard on them.
To kick off the revamping of our class and a fresh start, we focused on working together, manners and kindness this week. Students completed a paper chain STEM challenge. Each team was given one piece of construction paper, and the group members had to strategize to make the longest possible chain. It was neat seeing them talk and work through their ideas. They found out fast that the longer and more narrow the strips, the longer the chain. Our manners lesson was a good refresher of how to show respect no matter where we are. The students came up with a wonderful list of how we can show manners at school and at home. I'm keeping it up in the room as a constant reminder. We also read an impactful book called The Little Bully—such great discussions stemmed from it. I hope this week helps the rapport and relationships in our room. For writing this week, we read mentor texts to see how authors make their stories special. Students had fun practicing using pop out words, exact actions and ellipses in their writing. Friendly reminder, Parent Teacher Conferences are the week of October 30. If you have not signed up or need to change your day/time, please do so here!
